Extended description

Blue Sapphire 5.559 ct

This sapphire is blue in color and weighs approximately 5.5 carats. The stone is just over 1 cm long, slightly over 8 millimeters wide, and 7.2 millimeters deep.

This blue sapphire shows very small inclusions. It has been graded by Lotus Gemology with the designation "Cornflower Blue." The gemstone institute has its own color classifications for rubies and sapphires. "Cornflower Blue" is one of these color types according to Lotus Gemology. GLA has assigned this stone a very good color quality.

The transparent gemstone was cut into a faceted antique oval. The top was brilliant-cut, and the bottom features four facet crowns.

Origin

The Lotus certificate indicates that this sapphire is from Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Treatment

The note in the certificate "Signs of a thermal treatment" suggests that the stone has undergone a heat treatment. Such treatments are very common and standard in the trade. Heating, also called "firing," is a science in itself. The specialists keep their "recipes" strictly secret. Firing is used to permanently enhance both the color and the clarity of a stone.

Additional information

The valuation report was issued by the Gemological Laboratory Austria (GLA). You will receive the corresponding certificate with the replacement value of €32,100, which is required for your insurance.

The laboratory is led by Richard Hughes, one of the most recognized specialists in corundum and author of the classic "Ruby & Sapphire." Lotus Gemology has graded this stone as "Cornflower Blue."
