Rubellite – the red variety of tourmaline

The most famous rubellite is the one presented by King Gustav III of Sweden to Czarina Catherine the Great in 1786. The 255-carat stone's deep red color initially led to it being mistaken for a ruby.

The Ural tourmaline and the ruby-red “Siberian rubellite” were discovered during the Czarina's reign.

Rubellite (also rubellite) is a red trumaline. Its color ranges from light pink to deep red and violet. The closer its color is to that of a ruby, the more valuable it is.

Use

Red tourmaline is particularly popular because of its similarity to rubies. The intensity of its red color changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Rings, necklaces and earrings with this gemstone are real eye-catchers.

Tourmaline is considered the birthstone for October and is also a popular gift for the 5th wedding anniversary. If your beloved loves the color red, you should consider a piece of jewelry with a rubellite.

Have the red stone set in white, red or yellow gold, or combine it with crystals and diamonds to accentuate its vibrant color.

Origin

Until the beginning of the 20th century, rubellite mainly came from Russia. Today, rubellite usually comes from Brazil, the United States and Madagascar.

Characteristics

Rubellite is a variety of the mineral elbaite, which belongs to the tourmaline group. This gemstone owes its vivid red color to the element manganese. Its hardness is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it well suited for jewelry.

Most popular cuts

The rough stones are usually elongated and have a triangular cross-section. This usually results in elongated cut shapes, such as the baguette, octagon, emerald or cushion cut. Rarely, you will find this tourmaline with a round cut.
