Imperial topaz – buy an imperial gemstone

In the 19th century, deposits of topaz were discovered in the Russian Ural Mountains. In honor of the Russian tsars, this stone was named “imperial topaz”. Only monarchs were allowed to own the precious gemstone. In German-speaking countries, this gemstone is also known as “kaiserlicher Topas” or “Königstopas”.

What exactly constitutes an imperial topaz is not clearly defined. Its colors range from champagne to golden yellow. Pinkish-orange stones are also occasionally referred to as imperial topaz.

Imperial topaz – one of many topaz varieties

For a long time, all yellow stones were called topaz. In addition, only yellow stones were considered topaz. Meanwhile, mineralogists have found that topaz comes in many different colors. In addition to imperial topaz, there is also blue topaz, as well as yellow, pink, blue-green, reddish, and white topazes.

Imperial topaz: origin & mining

In 1768, finds of imperial topaz were recorded for the first time. Imperial topaz is mainly mined in the states of Minas Gerais and Antonio Pereira. Other sites are located in Russia and Pakistan.

Use for jewelry

Since imperial topaz is rare, it can also be considered as a possible investment. Should the imperial topaz sources dry up, an increase in value can be expected. However, this stone is mainly used for jewelry.

In the IGNEOUS gemstone shop, you can buy imperial topaz that a goldsmith can process according to your ideas. Thanks to its high hardness (8 on the Mohs hardness scale), this gemstone can be used for all kinds of jewelry, from rings to bracelets to necklaces. If you find two similar stones, you can even have earrings made from them.

Depending on your preference, you can set the imperial topaz in silver, yellow or white gold. It is also guaranteed to turn heads when combined with small diamonds or other colored gemstones.

This precious stone is the ideal gift for people you hold in high esteem, thanks to its symbolism as an imperial stone. According to the American Gem Society, topaz is also the birthstone for November. If you are still looking for a piece of jewelry for someone born in November, you should consider the imperial topaz.

Properties: hardness, inclusions and treatment

Almost only untreated Imperial Topaz is offered for sale. Occasionally, the color of this royal stone is improved by firing. Careful heating darkens light stones. Treated stones must be identified as such in the certificate.

Most common cuts: Imperial Topaz is usually faceted

Imperial topaz is often faceted. The most common cuts are the antique cut, oval cut, round cut or emerald cut. However, imperial topaz can also be found in the smooth cabochon cut. Rough stones are also used for pendants on necklaces.
