Yellow sapphire

In addition to the popular blue sapphire, sapphires also come in a number of other colors. One of these is yellow. In addition to blue and yellow sapphires, there are also pink sapphires, padparadscha sapphires, green sapphires, white sapphires and purple sapphires. All non-blue sapphires are also known as fancy sapphires.

Yellow sapphires come in different shades of yellow, from light yellow to yellow-green. To the naked eye, they can be mistaken for other yellow gemstones such as citrine or imperial topaz.

The value of yellow sapphires

Like the ruby, sapphires are a type of corundum. Corundum is a very valuable gemstone. The most valuable is the ruby, followed by the blue sapphire. Among the fancy sapphires, the padparadscha and the pink sapphire are the most valuable. Yellow sapphires can also fetch very high prices, but they must be of excellent quality. Quality is determined by the 4 C's: carat (weight), color, cut and clarity. A large sapphire of a beautiful yellow color, well cut and eye-clean can be very valuable. However, a blue sapphire of the same quality is usually more expensive.

Origin & Mines

Sapphires are usually mined by hand in small mines. They are found in Africa, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, China, Australia, Brazil and North America (mainly in Montana).

Yellow Sapphire: Use in Jewelry

Yellow sapphire is mainly used for jewelry. Yellow sapphires from the IGNEOUS gemstone shop are also ideal for making jewelry for different occasions. The color yellow is associated with the sun. With a bright yellow gemstone, you can symbolically give cheerfulness and optimism and thus cheer up the mind of the recipient. In addition, the color yellow stands for knowledge and spiritual enlightenment. This also makes it a good choice for a graduation gift.

Of course, a piece of jewelry with a yellow sapphire is also ideal for anyone who has a preference for the color yellow. Depending on your taste and the color nuances, yellow sapphire can be set in yellow gold, white gold or silver. However, a setting in yellow gold is particularly recommended. This makes the color of this sapphire stand out particularly beautifully. This sapphire is also often combined with other fancy sapphires. Of course, it can also be combined with other precious stones. It is often framed by small diamonds.

It can be used in rings, bracelets, bangles, necklaces and chokers.

Properties: hardness & inclusions

As with all sapphires, small inclusions are also possible in yellow sapphires. These affect the price and must be mentioned in the certificate.

Corundums are valued for their extreme hardness, among other things. With a hardness of 9 on the ten-point Mohs scale, they are the second hardest gemstones. Only diamonds are harder.

Most common cuts: faceted or cabochon

Yellow sapphires of good color quality and clarity are usually faceted. The cushion cut, round or oval cut, pear cut or octagon cut, among others, are used for this.

In addition to facet cuts, yellow sapphires can also be found in a smooth cabochon cut.
